Database Administrator - Intermediate

Description:

Lead the development and delivery of functional and ministry-specific analytics to support evidence-based decision-making and produce actionable insights. Work closely with client groups to assess current data analytics and reporting capabilities, gather future-state requirements and identify further opportunities for improvement. Facilitate decision-making and manage client expectations. Own the execution of analytics initiatives including end-to-end reporting and data set delivery. Participate in documentation, development, testing

Work with functional area experts, Data Architects and ETL Developers and stakeholders to understand complex business issues and develop appropriate Business Intelligence solutions. Design methods to capture, structure, transform and process data to be used to generate models. Build data models that provide information which is accurate, easy to understand and unbiased. Communicate complex quantitative analysis in a clear and precise manner, providing useful visuals and summaries. Provide interpretation, advice, and expertise to client groups and other stakeholders, including direction on how to transform analytics into actionable information and proactive insights that support decision making.

Awareness of emerging Business Intelligence trends and directions
Experience with analytical software such as R,
Proficiency with desktop analysis software including Microsoft Excel, Access, VBA, Power BI
 
The general scope of work for the Database Administrator involves:
Assisting with the transformation/cleaning of data from a legacy database into a new data warehouse
Determine appropriate data structure for remaining relevant legacy data
Develop mapping and transformation rules to align the two databases
Create data dictionary for new data
Develop connections with multiple other government databases and develop system to maintain the connection so that it does not go out of date
Supporting Power BI visualization and report building
Develop and test any automated data validation tools deemed necessary

Experience and Skill Set Requirements
Database Skills - 70%
Experience with one or more database technologies
Proficiency with SQL and experience writing SQL scripts
Experience designing data architecture for new databases
Experience in monitoring and enforcing database rules
Experience cleaning, transforming and joining data
Experience is creating and applying data standards
Experience with dimensional data models
Subject matter expert in database design of data warehouse or data marts.
 
Communication Skills - 25%
Experience in developing documentation on data standardization and requirements
Demonstrated consulting and relationship management skills, with proven ability to elicit requirements, develop/consult on options and solutions, and provide effective guidance
Strong verbal and written communication skills; with both technical and non-technical audiences
A demonstrated team player with a track record for meeting deadlines

OPS Experience - 5%
Previous public sector experience in an organization of equivalent size and complexity to the Ontario Public Service.
